Ecology of Death and Annihilation: A Ceremony for Things that Wither

Since ancient times, humanity has engaged in acts of worship and sought redemption through playing instruments, chanting, letting out a cry, or burning plants to make smoke, among other things. 
The materials that comprised such rituals included scent, light, movement, and sound, which developed into what we today understand as art. 

'Ecology of Death and Annihilation' delves into the ritualistic origins of art by staging a contemporary form of ritual. 
In this time-space, one is immersed in a sublime ecology of death, annihilation and things that wither, where sounds reverberate and eventually dissipate into silence, as if simulating incense smoke that withers away. 
Sound and scent are utilized in this performance not only to reflect on the possibility of contemporary ritual—which is motivated by private experience to a certain extent—but also to explore the relationship between auditory and olfactory stimulation and formation of consciousness.

태초부터 인류는 특정한 악기의 소리, 읊조리거나 내지르는 목소리와 더불어 식물을 태워 연기를 내는 행위 등으로 초월적 존재에게 무언가를 기원하거나 인간 스스로를 구원해왔다. 
의식에 사용되었던 소리, 냄새, 빛, 움직임 등의 제의적 요소들은 발전되거나 변형되어오며 예술의 기원이 되었다.

‘죽음과 소멸의 생태계’는 예술의 제의적 기원에 초점을 맞추며 작품 자체를 동시대적 의식으로 규정한다. 
메아리쳐 사라지며 침묵으로 소멸하는 소리들과 죽어가는 향 연기들이 뒤엉켜 만들어내는 시공간 속에서 죽음과 소멸, 사라지는 것들의 숭고한 생태계를 구축해낸다. 
사운드와 향이 결합된 이 퍼포먼스는 청각적, 후각적 자극이 의식(consciousness)에 주는 영향과 사적 경험에서 시작된 동시대 제의에 대한 고찰을 다감각적으로 풀어낸다.
